The fourth mobility: St. Martin (France)3rd-6th February 2013 Interculturalism as a good example of active citizenship |
All locations of our mobilities were fascinating but any of them could be compared to the friendly island of St. Martin. For most of us it was a journey of lifetime. The landscape is stunning and people of St. Martin are truly welcoming and warm hearted. The week offered us a never returning option to know a Caribbean island and the lifestyle and attitude which is entirely different from us. The tourist paradise is an ultimately modern world but the hosts put an emphasize to make us acquainted with their traditions. We went to a traditional village of Grand Casé to know the original hand-made artefacts of St. Martin, visited the fortress of Louis the 1st and his museum. We will never forget the garden which intents to preserve the island native plants, trees, fruits and vegetables. The Carnival brings back the memories of the distinguished Caribbean atmosphere. I know, it is hard to imagine but we fulfilled our tasks to. We wanted to find out the topic of active citizenship from the point of view of the influence immigrants can bring into the culture of local communities. The presentations showing the traditions and culture of the participating countries were full of new pieces of information and really very interesting. We could experience how beautiful the diversity of civilisation is. We became aware that on one hand we have to do our best to make a real community of the countries of European Union but we have to preserve the originalities and traditions of our predecessors. We could enjoy some grammar lessons about the difficulties which the acquisition of native languages mean for the emigrants. |
